Last night, I watched a great live radio-style broadcast play at The Roxy Theatre of the ingenious detective story, Gas Head Willy directed by Bill Murphy. My novel marathon writing buddy, Richard J. Thomas, author of the novel the play was based on, starred as Detective DB Murphy. Richard & the entire cast had the audience laughing from the moment they arrived. Fantastic show! Great night out! Kudos to everyone involved. 💕
If you haven't read the novel, you should. It was originally published in July 1996 by The Ginger Press Bookstore and Cafe, and is available in paperback or ebook format, plus you can find it on Amazon.ca. It was Richard's first full-length novel and was shortlisted by the Crime Writers of Canada, as one of the best first novels of the year. The story is based on the real history of Owen Sound back in the 1920's. Richard wrote this novel while participating in a three-day novel writing marathon to raise money for literacy (this is where I met him). Richard raised funds by asking people to contribute BIG money to the cause, and he would name characters in his book after them. Since publishing his first Detective DB Murphy novel, he has moved on to write seven more books in the series. I've heard a NEW book in this series is to arrive at the Ginger Press Bookstore in Owen Sound just in time for Christmas! Stop by and ask Maryann Thomas about it.
Special note: The play is set in the 1920's, but they decided to perform it as it might have been in 1942, to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of CFOS Radio. The play is broken up with tiny CFOS radio commercials performed throughout. The sound effects are all live (and are hilarious to watch them created by Foley Artists: Jack Goad, Mike Tettenborn and Martin Cooper).
